The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) continues to intensify its support for local governments to be front liners of inclusive growth by advocating for LGUs to become more business-friendly and competitive.

Through its Canada-backed program, the Local Governance Support Program for Local Economic Development (LGSP-LED), DILG is conducting a coaching session for Local Economic and Investment Promotion Officers (LEIPOs) from 18 provinces: Palawan; Albay; Sorsogon; Aklan; Antique; Iloilo; Negros Occidental; Negros Oriental; Siquijor; Cebu; Davao del Norte; Pangasinan; Guimaras; Bohol; Zamboanga del Norte; Leyte; South Cotabato; and, Sultan Kudarat.

DILG first introduced the designation of LEIPOs to LGUs in 2010 after President Aquino declared that creating jobs was the government’s top priority under his leadership. LEIPOs are primarily tasked to oversee policies, programs, and services on local economic development, promote investment in the locality, as well as maintain an economic database of an LGU.

Through the coaching session, participating LEIPOs will be refreshed and updated on what it takes for an LGU to be more conducive for business growth. Participants will also be able to identify gaps needed to be addressed in their current policies and programs and enumerate specific action items to fasttrack job creation in their communities through this activity.

At the end of the two-day coaching session, DILG hopes to gauge how business-friendly LGUs are at present and how to further help local governments transition to be more business-friendly.
