The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) continues to support local governments as front liners of inclusive growth by advocating for LGUs to become more business-friendly and competitive.

Part of this process is ensuring the local supply of workforce meets—in number and competencies—the demand of priority industries and emerging investors, leading ultimately to more jobs for a larger number of Filipinos.

In January 2015, through its Canada-backed program, the Local Governance Support Program for Local Economic Development (LGSP-LED), DILG helped eleven (11) provinces complete nine (9) tourism circuit plans within the priority Tourism Development Areas identified by the national government.

Tourism circuit plans serve as basis for LGUs in designing and implementing local economic development initiatives in their communities. In the workforce development component of each plan, skilled workforce requirements of the local private sector are identified in order to: (1) upgrade the standards of services of the existing workforce; and/or, (2) train unemployed residents of the locality.

To figure out how it can better help LGUs, DILG is conducting a Workshop on Workforce Development for some 50 participants from its partner-LGUs and regional offices catering primarily to Public Employment Service Officers (PESO) from Palawan, Albay, Sorsogon, Negros Occidental, Iloilo, Aklan, Antique, Negros Oriental, Cebu, and Davao Del Norte. National Government Agency representatives will also attend to share related tools, programs, and services available to LGUs.

At the end of the 3-day workshop, participants are expected to be able to create an LGU Business Plan on Workforce Development for their respective areas.
